Imphal, March 28 2011:
Although the Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Department has not adequate number of godowns required for the increasing population of the State, a godown of 7000 metric tonne capacity built during British period at Koirengei has been handed over to Tourism Department.
A reliable source informed that the CAF &PD Department handed over to Tourism Department to make way for the latter's initiative to construct a Hotel Management Institute.
At present, the largest godown is located at Sangaiprou and it has capacity of 7000 metric tonnes.
The State's requirement of rice for a month is 7887 metric tonnes and sugar is 1803 metric tonnes.
Incidentally, the Home Ministry has already directed the State Government to keep four months requirement of rice in buffer stock in view of the poor transport infrastructure and frequent blockades.
