Vodafone caretaker shot at

Imphal, March 28 2011:
A caretaker of the Vodafone mobile phone service was shot at and injured in his right thigh last night around 9 pm, police as well as locals said.
Decrying the act of the UGs, locals of Kongba Laishram Leikai today staged a sit-in protest.
A bullet that hit the right thigh of caretaker, Keisham Basanta Singh (28) of Kongba Laishram Leikai exited on the other side.
Some suspected UGs who were apparently waiting for him near the tower fired at least two rounds on Basanta.
One of the bullets missed the target, family members said adding that Basanta was going to put off the power generator of the tower.
Two empty cases were recovered by Porompat police, who rushed to the spot after the incident.
Family as well as police are yet to know the motive behind the shooting at of Basanta.
Womenfolk of the area asserted that Basanta is an innocent man and living with the meager income he earns as caretaker.
Thiyam Mema, leader of the local meira paibi lup, condemned the act and demanded clarification if any of the UG groups are involved.
The womenfolk also set a March 30 deadline to clarify the reason behind the shooting to injure of a local man saying that they would launch protests from the next if the responsible group failed to clarify.
