Kawlhen celebrates 121st anniversary

One of the oldest villages under Henglep sub-division, Kawlhen on Saturday recalled its legendary ancestors as it celebrated the 121 years of the village establishment and the golden jubilee of its youth club and the Zillai.
Presently under the Chieftainship of Henglep MLA, T Manga Vaiphei, Kawlhen village was founded by Pumneikhup and his cliques in 1890.The village was one of the few villages that were recognized by the British during their rule and the Maharaja of Manipur.
The anniversary celebration was attended by the Chief T Manga Vaiphei, S Kamsuanlun Executive Member ADCC as Chief Guest in and on behalf of T Phungzathang, Demmang Haokip Vice Chairman ADCC, and Genneikhup Executive Member ADCC and hoards of other dignitaries.
In a message on the souvenir release to mark the occasion, Chief Minister O Ibobi said, "As for Kawlhen village, there would be so much to cherish and feel proud of in its history.
I hope the celebration should not be just an occasion to be nostalgic about the past glory of the village, but an occasion to acknowledge with gratitude the faithfulness and goodness of the Lord God all these years" .
MPCC President Gikhangam, Revenue Minister Th Debendra, Power Minister T Phuzathang and ADGP Lallian Mang Khaute were the others that wrote messages in the souvenir.
Besides the glory Kawlhen village was embedded with, in the past, the eldest son of its founder Khupzathang was one of the first tribal to own a motor vehicle.
His Chevrolet was used for ferrying passengers in between Imphal and Dimapur in the 40s.Appointed by the Maharaja as Babu in 1918 he resides in Imphal Babulane, an area where the GP Women College is presently located.
