New Delhi, November 21:
Thailand has shown keenness in investing in sectors like food processing, tourism and infrastructure in the northeastern region, the Lok Sabha was informed today.
A North East India Investments Opportunities Week was observed in Thailand capital Bangkok last month to generate Thai-India economic cooperation in the region, Development of North Eastern Region Minister Mani Shankar Aiyar said in a written reply.
"With the overwhelming response we received from the Thai side, we are hopeful that the state governments in the northeast will build on that and will be able to attract investments and expertise in various sectors," Aiyar said.
Thailand's industry ministry has already opened an "India Desk" in the Thailand Board of Investment.
Both the sides identified infrastructure (road, rail, inland waterways, air connectivity and energy), food processing, tourism and hospitality, horticulture, handloom and handicraft, rubber and bamboo as the most viable sectors for investments.
The nearly 200-strong Indian delegation was led by Aiyar and included the chief ministers of Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Nagaland.
Representatives of the two sides huddled in various plenary, sectoral and one-to-one sessions.
An exhibition to showcase products of the northeast, where exhibitors from all the states of the region participated, was also organised.
