The Manipur Dramatic Union (MDU), the oldest theatre group in Manipur, completed 80 years of its existence today.
The union celebrated the day at its hall at Yaikul Police Land.
The celebration function which was marked by distributions of awards instituted by the union to its artistes and presentations of songs that were sung in various drama produced by the union was graced by MLA, Elangbam Suraj as chief guest and presided over by the president of the union, Kshetrimayum Ibohal.
Awards were conferred to four artistes.
Gambini Award was conferred to Soraisam Keshoram of Sega Road Thoudababok Leikai, Yumlembam Jibankumar award to Telem Upendro of Hodam Leirak, S Chaoba Award to Brajabashimayum Jugol of Hodam Leirak and Chaobi Award to Phurailakpam Premlata of Brahmapur Nahabam Leikai.
The award consisted of a citation, a memento and Rs 500 cash.
Speaking as chief guest of the function, MLA E Suraj expressing happy with the completion 80 years of the theatre group lauded the contribution made by the theatre group in the society.
However, he observed that despite completion of 80-year, the union is yet to march ahead to entertain the people.
For this, dedication of the artistes and director of the union is a must.
MDU president who presided over the function credited the long existence of the Union to the people.
It is with the people's support that MDU is still surviving and serving the people.
He went on to say that despite the best effort, the income earned by the Union could not meet the expenditure in the construction of the hall but expressed hoped that before the centenary celebration on the completion of 100 year.
