Imphal, July 09 2010:
Semester system is due to start in all the colleges of Manipur from the upcoming academic session, but the prospect of students in Modern College is not so bright with the functioning of the college always been affected with lack of necessary infrastructure and teaching staff.
Addressing a press conference in this connection today, general secretary of Modern College Students' Union Ningthoujam Basanta Kumar Meitei informed that out of the total 104 staff in the college, only 74 of them are teaching staff and 30 of them non-teaching staff while 13 other are part-time teachers and 31 other contract teachers.
There is also no librarian in the college, he added.
Pointing out that the post of a regular Director in Higher Education Department has been lying vacant since 1986, Basanta observed that this has delayed development in most colleges including Modern College.
Compounding the problem, the post of the principal in Modern college too has been laying cant for a long time, thereby affecting the administration of the college properly.
Basanta appealed to the Government to fill up the vacant posts at the earliest possible.
There is also no provisions for drinking water, adequate class rooms, staff room, library and toilets, etc in Modern College, Basanta informed.
He further said that in the absence of proper fencing, the college campus has become a grazing ground for the cattles.
There is also the problem of lack of adequate teachers in the college.
Department wise, there should be eight teachers for practical classes.
But out of these eight teachers, two are due to be retired from the college very soon, Basanta conveyed.
In view of the introduction of semester system which would require conduct of regular classes, the student union has appealed the students to attend classes regular and maintained at least 75 percent attendance as well as to the teachers to remain in the college for at least 2 hours to enable the students to clear their doubts.
The student union has also demanded the State Government to increase the room facility of the teachers, construct a hostel for the girls, to introduce technical and professional courses apart from taking care of infrastructural requirement in the college.
Furthermore, the student body has proposed that students in uniform should be given fare concession at the time of travelling in public transport buses in case the students production their identity cards.
