To protest the killing of two persons by unidentified gunmen at Hmar Veng area under Churachandpur Police on the night of May 7, a bandh was imposed in Churachandpur town today with all the shops remaining closed.
With violence escalating over the past few days and tension running high, the district administration has imposed curfew with effect from 5 pm today as pre-emptive measures to prevent occurrence of any untoward incident.
There was also no passenger bus service from Churachandpur today with buses from Imphal plying only upto Kangvai.
Although there is no report of any untoward incident during the virtual bandh, alert security personnel prevented some miscreants from beating up a rickshaw driver who was ferrying sand bags in defiance of the bandh at around 2 pm.
Meanwhile, in view of the deteriorating law and order situation in the district, the district administration has imposed curfew in the town with effect from 5 pm today.
Issuing an order in this connection, District Magistrate of Churachandpur said that the curfew would remain in effect from 5 pm to 5 am daily for a period of six days.
The curfew would be in force within 6 kms radius of Churachandpur town.
The curfew area is enclosed by Rangkai on the east, Buangmol on the west, Khumoi on the north and New Lamka bridge on the southern side.
