Imphal, May 09:
Responding favorably to the overtures from the Government, the Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur today said that it will take part in the talks scheduled to be held on May 11 but cautioned that the talks will be fruitful only if the Government shows the will to implement Meetei Mayek.
The decision to accept the invitation of the Government was taken after due consultation with the president of DESAM L Romesh Meetei and vice president K Chinglenkhomba Meetei who are presently in jail, said the student body in a statement.
Stating that there have been numerous official as well as non-official meetings with the Govt to work out a solution, DESAM said that MLA N Biren was continuously in touch with the student body.
The MLA in turn conveyed the ideas of DESAM to the Govt on how to resolve the issue, said the statement.
The student body claimed that it took them a long time to clear the Govt's misconception that introducing the script will drive a wedge amongst the different communities in Manipur.
DESAM also acknowledged the role played by others in clearing the misconception and mentioned the contributions of teachers of MU, officials of the BSEM, Education (S), Education (U), the seminar organised by MU and SCERT etc.
The goal and aspirations of DESAM and MEELAL are the same, though the onus of pressing forward the demand has been taken up by MEELAL, said the statement.
It is not in the hands of DESAM to decide whether to relax or intensify the stir, said the student body adding that everything will depend on the decision taken by the Government.
DESAM relaxed its stir for some time following several unofficial intimations and feelers from the Government to work out a solution, said the statement.
However this does not mean that DESAM has been sleeping over the matter and was involved in taking up a number of important political steps to realise the demand for the implementation of the indigenous script.
The demand for the revival of the indigenous is something very different from other public issues which the people have witnessed, the student body explained.
