The Manipur State Human Rights Commission (MSHRC) has called upon countries of South Asia/Asia to urge upon the Government to ratify Anti-Torture Convention.
Addressing a conference of NHRIs of South Asian Countries on Human Rights Awareness and National Capacity Building held at New Delhi from April 16 to 18 under the aegis of the National Human Rights Commission , India, MSHRC member Ng Nongyai decried the failure of the Government of India to comply with the UN obligation to repeal Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act 1958 from Manipur despite the recommendation of the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination towards this end.
Nongyai emphasised on the need to amend Article 19 of the 1993 National Human Rights Protection Act to terminate impunity.
He also urged upon South Asian/Asian countries to sign 1998 ICC Rome Treaty.
Nongyai further highlighted the crucial necessity to form Asian Union/Asia Human Rights Commission.
He asserted that the UN and the South Asian/Asian community should work to eliminate with a firm resolve the extra-judicial executions and involuntary disappearances which have become a daily affair in Manipur, conveyed a press release.
