Demands for revoking AFSPA gain momentum

Imphal, March 22: Continuing the protest against the excesses and atrocities of security personnel against civilians and against custodial killings, the Nupi Keithel Marup today staged a dharna at Laxmi bazar and Purana bazar from 9 am till 4.30 pm.

Decrying the excesses of the security personnel, the women folk demanded the revocation of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act from the State, which has granted immunity to the men in uniform to act as they please and go on a killing spree.

The women folk also took strong exception against the action of the State police personnel who rained blows and kicks on a group of women who had gone to present a case to the Chief Minister a few days back.

Asking the Govt to act when the security personnel step out of line, the women folk said it is becoming of a Govt to quietly keep mum even as the security men torture the people.

Later the women folk gathered and submitted a memorandum each to the office of the Governor as well as the office of the Chief Minister.

The women also asked that a cell be opened at the bungalow of the Chief Minister so that they may present their case.
