Imphal, March 22: A drunken miscreant shattered the spirit of the Chingjaroi Khamor Ngkhui festival held at Chingjaroi Christian village on March 20 and 21.According to police sources, the miscreant in a drunken stupor opened fire from his gun and critically injured an SO of CADA identified as Themrei Shimray on March 20 at about 6 pm.

Giving details, the source said that the incident occurred at Chingjaroi Khunou which is about 7 kms away from Chingjaroi Christian village.

The festival was attended by Rajya Sabha MP Rishang Keishing, GAD Minister Francis Ngajokpa, Horticulture Minister RK Theko, YAS Minister A Aza and Social Welfare Minister DK Korungthang.

Police source said that as the cavalcade of Ministers and their security escort, numbering over 20 vehicles, reached Chingjaroi Christian village, the village youth accorded a warm welcome to the delegates and it was decided that young boys and girls would pull the vehicle of Rishang Keishing as a mark of welcome to the venue of the celebration.

As all the vehicles came to a stop, the SO, who came in a private car, turned back towards Chingjaroi Khunou where he was shot by the drunken man from point blank range, said the source.

The gun shot shattered the window shield of the car.

The SO, Themrei Shimray, who suffered grievous injuries on the shoulder and near the neck was rushed back to Ukhrul in a Maruti van, after the Ukhrul SDPO reacted swiftly.
