The annual festival of Khamor Ngkhui (literally meaning bread festival) celebrated by the villagers of Chingjaroi village commenced on March 20 at the public ground of Chingjaroi Christian village with traditional fervor and gaiety.
Khamor Ngkhui is celebrated to evoke the blessings of God for adequate rain and prosperity of the village besides providing a social platform to all its people for merry making and to celebrate the human spirit.
Chingjaroi village is situated within Chingai Assembly Constituency of Ukhrul district.
EE of Electricity Department, Ukhrul S Joykumar inaugurated the festival by unveiling a memorial stone after which Chief Executive Officer of Ukhrul District Autonomous Council R Ramthar evoked the blessing of Almighty God for abundant rainfall and good harvest.
Ramthar further disclosed that an amount of Rs 6 lakh had been sanctioned for construction of a school building at Chingjaroi village.
Fund has also already been released for construction of a Civil Dispensary at the village.
Rajya Sabha MP Rishang Keishing who attended the function as one of the special invitees informed that he has a long association with the village.
He stayed at the village for a long time and the villagers helped lot when he contested election, he recollected.
Another special invitee, Minister of Horticulture and Soil Conservation RK Thekho said that he has strong emotional bonding with the village even though he has shifted and is staying at Senapati.
He grew up and had his formative education at the village school, he informed.
GAD and Taxation Minister Francis Ngajokpa, who stayed at the village while working as a school teacher, recalled the good times he had and some of the lasting friendship he had made with some of the villagers.
Minister of State for Social Welfare DK Korungthang, who also attended the function as one of the special guests, considered himself lucky to be given a chance to take part in the festivity.
Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports and local MLA A Aza, Joint Director of YAS, ZEO Ukhrul, (CDPO Chingai and SDPO Ukhrul among others who took part in the function.
Before arriving at Chingjaroi, the Ministerial and official team was given accorded a series receptions.
First the students of Alice Christian Higher Secondary School gave warm welcome to the visiting dignitaries at Ukhrul District Headquarters followed by reception function hosted by Marem Khullen Youth Club, Shanao Long and the villagers of Marem Khullen.
Villagers also submitted a memorandum to the visiting Ministerial team highlighting the problems of the village.
