A major fire having potential to devastate Saivom village in Tengnoupal sub-division of Chandel district was averted today.
The wild forest fire which had spread out from the nearby hills where preparation are on for jhum cultivation was rapidly approaching towards the village.
On receiving the report of the blaze, fire service personnel from Chandel district headquarters rushed in to the village to take of control of the inferno.
personnel of 18 Assam Rifles posted at Tengnoupal, 8 Manipur Rifles of Saivom post, volunteers of Kuki Students' organisation, Tengnoupal Block and locals also made a joint effort to douse the fire, evacuate the people and other household properties to safer places before the fire could reach the village.
The fire which spread out at around 11 am was put under control at around 6 pm.
The slash and burning practice of forests for jhum cultivation by some people near the village has been a cause of concern for Saivom villagers for the past couple of days, expressed the village chief Aling Haokip.
