Following the successful experimentation of utilising Phumdi (floating biomass on Loktak Lake) for making organic manure to increase crop productivity by a dedicated team of scientists from LDA and Central Agriculture University, State Govt has taken up steps to rope in DONER for providing additional fund for taking up the project on a large scale.
A project proposal has already been submitted to the DONER for providing Rs 38 crores towards setting up the project, an official source disclosed.
If the proposed Integrated Loktak Management Project is approved, State Government would set up an industry where compost manure of the highest quality would be prepared on large scale and make it available to the farmers, the official said.
For providing raw materials to run the industry, local people would be encourage to collect Phumdi from Loktak Lake and supply them to LDA, the source said, expressing confident that this would help in generating income for the people.
Commenting on superior quality of compost manure made from Phumdi, the official stated that used of this organic manure in farming not only increase productivity of crops but also increase the fertility of the soil.
