Host lifters clinched four medals including two gold on the opening day of the Eastern India Weightlifting Championship at GM Hall today.
The day began with Kh Sanjita Chanu wresting the women's 48 kg gold medal with a total lift of 148 kgs including of 65 kg in the snatch and N Thoinu providing the silver with a grand tally of 140 kgs.
In men's 56 kg event, L Abin and N Menjor respectively added the gold and silver medals to hosts' haul.
Lifters of Nagaland and West Bengal prevented clean sweep of the medals by the hosts with S Mirabai securing the 48 kg bronze for the former and surata Mandal opening latter's medal account finishing third in the men competition.
In 106 lifters from nine states of the eastern region are taking part in the championship which was formally inaugurated by sports Minister N Biren as the chief guest and president of Manipur Weightlifting Association Ng Rastrapati Singh as the president.
President of Eastern India Weightlifting Association Gopal Khanra and chief patron of the State association E Binoykumar Singh graced the occasion as the guests of honour.
