Imphal, April 07 2010:
Normal life in the hill districts of Manipur came to a grinding halt on account of the 72-hour general strike being called by the Joint Action Committee for 2006/2009 Autonomous District Council DPC Faced Candidates' Parents and Guardians, Manipur.
However the general strike did not affect education institutions.
The general strike was by and large peaceful with no report of any untoward incident.
The JAC has called the general strike to demand the declaration of the results of the viva-voce conducted for appointment of 3453 primary teachers under the Autonomous District Councils.

The general strike is being supported by various organisations including Chandel Naga People's Organisation, Kuki Chiefs' Association, Senapati District Students' Association, Tangkhul Students' Union, Tangkhul Naga Long, etc.
On account of the general strike, normal life in Senapati, Ukhrul, Tamenglong , Churachandpur and Chandel remained affected today with market places and shops remaining shut in the district headquarters.
Though security forces have been deployed in all the district headquarters as pre-emptive measures of preventing unwanted incidents, passenger buses and taxi services stayed off the roads.
However, some inter-State bus services and goods carrier trucks did ply with security escorts.
The attendance in the Government offices in the hill districts was also reported to be thin.
Talking to mediapersons, convenor of the JAC Chungsat Khongsai described the failure of announcing the results of the viva-voce for all these years as violation of the right to education of the people.
Stating that the JAC has making all out efforts to ensure that the current strike is as peaceful and democratic as possible, Chungsat warned that in case the Government does not listen to the rightful demand even after the imposition of the strike, the JAC would go ahead with its decision of imposing indefinite economic blockade along the National Highways with effect from April 9 midnight and launched various other intense agitations as announced.
