State under-21 team narrowly defeated strong contenders Assam by a solitary goal in the qualifying round of North East zone Under-21 National Football Championship for Mr Dutta Roy Trophy being organized by Nagaland Football Association at Dimapur under the aegis of All India Football Federation today.
After a barren first half, State's match winning goal was netted by M Robin who found the net with a grounder in the 70th minute from an aerial ball cross by L Sanjoy from the left flank inside the penalty box of the opposition.
Meghalaya, host Nagaland, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh were pooled in group A of the tournament while in group B Manipur, Assam and Mizoram are clubbed together.
Tripura and Arunachal in group A and Mizoram in group B have failed to turn up for the tournament.
