In a noble gesture, Major Gen BS Ghotra, Inspector General of Assam Rifles (South) extended monetary help to an ailing and recovering correspondent of The Assam Tribune, Sobhapati Samom during a simple but impressive function at the premises of the Manipur Press Club today evening.
The IG also donated a computer set to the Press Club.
The IG gave a sum of Rs 12,000 to Sobhapati Samom.
Addressing the media persons at the function, BS Ghotra acknowledged the trying circumstances in which media persons have to work in Manipur.
Despite the hardships and inconveniences faced by the media persons, the IG expressed hope that they will continue with the good work and disseminate fair and unbiased information to the public.
Assuring the co-operation of Assam Rifles to the fourth estate in Manipur, the IG said that his office is forever ready to co-operate and extend all possible help to the press fraternity and the Press Club.
The Major Gen also expressed hope that the Press Club will come to serve as an important meeting point for people of different professions and walk of life where they can relax and discuss issues important to the people and land.
The All Manipur Working Journalists Union, which maintains the Press Club, extended its profuse gratitude to the Assam Rifles and the IG for extending monetary assistance to Sobhapati Samom and for gifting a computer to the Press Club.
