UNIEDWEL has highlighted Sharmila's story to the world communities at the World Social Forum which was held from Jan 16 to 21 at Mumbai, informed LC Jinine Meetei secy gen UNIEDWEL.
In a statement, the secy gen said that attentions of many important International personalities were sought and appeals were made to them to look into the gross human rights violations in Manipur during the meet.
The case of Sharmila who has been on fast unto death for the last three years demanding for the removal of certain draconian laws from the State was also specifically highlighted to all the delegates, said the secy gen who also asked the delegates to pay more attention to the situation in Manipur as human rights are violated rampantly like in Kashmir, Burma, Palestine if not more.
Among the eminent personalities which UNIEDWEL exclusively talked with were Brad Adams Educative Director Asia Division Human Rights Watch, Irene Khan Secy gen Amnesty International, Eric R Aronson Amnesty International USA Coordinator, North East Asylum and Detention Project, Suzuyo Takazato Co Chair Women Act Against Military Violence Japan, Rania Masri Institute of Southern Studies, Ashok Agrawal, Ramnarayan Kumar Punjab Defenders, Justice H Suresh, Imtiyaz Ahmad -Kashmir Defender.
Sharmila's booklets were also handed over personally to Shirin Ebadi 2003 Iranian Nobel peace Prize Winner, Arundhati Roy Book Prize Winner etc.
