A book on the life history of Phungkhothang Guite (1900- 1987), chief and founder of Hiangtam Lamka village was released during a function at YPA Hall, Upper Lamka today.
The 46-page booklet, which gives a biographical account of the life and achievement of Phungkhothang was authored by Rev G Haukhomang, his third son.
Phungkhothang had founded a village now called Upper Lamka, infested with mosquitoes, fever and fleas at that time, way back in 1930.Pu Phungzathang Tonsing, Minister(IFCD, TD, Transport) who graced the occasion as chief guest and release the book lauded the pioneering role played by chiefs in the development of the tribal society through the ages and said that they have acted as a bulwark against all hostile elements for their subjects.
The pre-sent generation owes them a debt of gratitude and we should follow them closely in their footsteps for our own good, he added.
Mr T Gwite IPS(Retd) and Ex-Chair, MPSC said that Mr.Phungkhothang, apart from being a great visionary, is a pioneer in education and had set up one of the earliest mission schools in the district in 1927 at Sialbu village.
"He is endowed with an amiable personality that endears him to his subjects and friends", he said.
