At least four persons were injured when unidentified gunmen assaulted them last night at Khumujamba Meitei Leikai, Lamka.
The four persons who are undergoing treatment at the District Hospital here are K Basanta (32), Surendra (30), N Ibungo (36) and Ashok Kumar (35), all from Khumujamba leikai locality.
None of them were, however, in a serious condition.
According to local sources, about 20 men, fully armed and dressed in camouflage uniform, arrived at the locality around 8 pm last night and behaving as if looking for a particular UG group, assaulted some people who were in the area and entered some houses.
They also fired some random shots.
Sources said that the assailants spoke Hindi and their identities are not known.
The police and IRB team later rushed to the area but the assailants had left by then.
About three empty cases of AK-47 bullets were recovered from the spot.
A case in connection with the incident is registered with the CCpur Police.
Representatives from all Meitei localities in Lamka today held a meeting under the chairmanship of M Ibo Singh at Khumujamba leikai to discuss the issue.
The meeting strongly condemned the act of the armed persons and passed a four point resolution which include that the authorities should immediately investigate the matter and arrest the culprits; that unless action against the culprits is taken within seven days, the people themselves will decide what course of action to be taken; that all organizations and groups should refrain from such condemnable action in the future; and that the Meitei Society and Meitei Youth Organization be entrusted to coordinate all activities to be taken.
