Advance Manipur Rural and Urban Development Organisation (AMRUDO), Singjamei Okram Leikai organised a one-day organic farming campaign at its conference hall today.
Speaking at the campaign as a resource person, Central Agriculture University, College of Argriculture, Department of Entomology professor, Dr Kh Ibohal said that vegetables found in the markets of the State are no more healthy to consume due to manuring of many poisonous chemical fertilizers to these vegetables.
Ibohanbi further said that morning walk, which is known as a healthy pursuit is no more healthy as most people return their homes with these poisonous vegetables in addition to consumption of toxic substances for long.
Conveying that using of Endosulfan has been banned in Karnataka following the death of many people, he said that Manipur, however, has not banned yet deadly chemicals like Diazinon.
Ibohanbi added that using of chemical fertilizers was started in India since the country launched its Green Revolution in 1960.As a result, many countries today refuse to buy pineapple and Assam tea as these are no more organic, he said.
Ibohanbi also said using of Hildan insecticide results to the steep fall in the numbers of indigenous fishes like ngakra and sareng in the State that in turn soars the price of ngakra to Rs 400/500 per kg in the market.
CAU Department of Agronomy, Associate Professor, Dr M Somorjit said that using of chemical fertilizers like urea may result to diseases like cancer, heart attack, indigestion and diabetes.
He also informed the gathering that Manipur stands second in the numbers of diabetic patients.
