Imphal, July 06:
A fierce gun fight ensued from 8.15 am today till late into the evening between cadres of the 242 Bn of the MPA of UNLF and Indian security force at the Myanmar border in Ukhrul district's Ashang Tangkhul village under Chassad police station.
Police source confirmed the incident and added that it occurred at a place called Charong village on the border.
Speaking to the press, a spokesman of the UNLF claimed that the incident occurred when the Indian security force tried to over run a camp of the MPA.
The Indian security personnel were led by NSCN (IM) cadres, added the spokesman.
There is no casualty on the side of the MPA cadres, though one unarmed cadre is still missing, said the spokesman and claimed that the combined team of Indian Army and the NSCN (IM) suffered casualties.
On being contacted, PRO, Defence Wing said that two UNLF men were killed in the gun fight while six Assam Rifles men were injured.
One Ak-47 rifle and two kenwood sets were recovered, he added.
Police sources said four injured security personnel were treated at the 1st Assam Rifles camp at Somsai in Ukhrul.
The security force and the IM men used two sniffer dogs in the attack, said the UNLF spokesman adding that the dogs were also killed in the gun fight.
The UNLF camp is located on the Indian side of the border and the Indian Army and the IM cadres sneaked up on them from the Myanmar side after taking a detour.
The spokesman appealed to the people of Manipur especially the Naga community to ponder over the attack launched on their camp by a joint team of the Indian Army and the NSCN (IM).
It is highly unfortunate that the NSCN (IM) should join hands with the Indian Army in attacking a revolutionary organisation working to regain the lost sovereignty of the land.
