Inaugurating a workshop on 'Maibi culture of Manipur' at MDU Hall here today, noted female Manipuri writer Maharajkumari Binodini has pointed out the need for thorough research to understand this aspect of Manipuri culture.
The workshop is being organised jointly by the Indira Gandhi National Centre for Arts (IGNCA), New Delhi; Manipur Film Development Corporation and Leimarol Khorjeikol.
Speaking as president of the inaugural function MK Binodini said the culture of Maibi is an important aspect of Manipuri society which mirrors the entire philosophy and cosmogenic belief of its people.
So it would be of great significance to do research on the culture of Maibi like the language being used by them, their lifestyle and other activities.
In her address as chief guest of the function, Bormani of Maibi Asuppi Loishang of Sanakonung observed that Maibis are the people who attend to the service of performing necessary rituals associated with Umang Lais.
So they should perform their duties with sincerely and dedication in appeasing the Umang Lai for the welfare of the State and its people.
In the morning session of the workshop moderated by film maker Aribam Syam Sharma, L Ashokumar presented paper on the history of Maibis and their culture in Manipur, Dr Ng Akasini Devi on the lifestyle of Maibis, N Premchand on the role of Maibis during Lai Haraoba and Ngariyanbam Kerani Singh on the relationship between the Maibi Loishang of Sanakonung and the Maibis.
