Imphal, December 11:
Joining the people of Manipur in paying homage and tribute to all the brave 'Imas' of Manipur, both known and unknown who fought against the then British colonial rule, monopoly trade interest and feudalism for the cause of justice, Governor Dr SS Sidhu has stated that observing Nupi Lan would be meaningful only when all the people join hands together to make a more prosperous and peaceful Manipur.
In his message to the people on the occasion of Nupi Lan which will be observed tomorrow, Dr Sidhu said that Nupi Lan is a unique historical episode and it brings back vivid memories of the valour of Manipuri women and their spirit of patriotism.
Manipuri women even now play a vital role in the Manipuri society specially in economic activities.
Braving the severe heat of summer, cold waves of winter and heavy showers during the rainy seasons through the streets on bare foot and sitting on the roadsides in the markets and selling vegetables and other items to earn livelihood of their family speaks volumes about the key role of Manipuri women in Manipuri society, Dr Sidhu noted.
Besides, their contribution to the reformation of the society, their work for the removal of social evils, is also of great importance, he added.
