The death of a 34-year old woman after she was admitted to a private clinic here for delivery sparks tension as women folk throng the District hospital premises early today.
According to Y Inao, the spouse of Sangita Devi, they reached the private clinic at around 2:30 pm yesterday and were attended by Dr T Shoute at around 5 pm, moments after he arrived from Imphal.
They were then admitted to the clinic and after administering some injection he went to sleep at around 11pm.Despite the suffering underwent by the patient and his repeated calls and appeal for the doctor, his wife was left only to the care of the nurses, who merely administered some injections that were not identified to them.
When the doctor was finally called upon early in the morning, his wife was already in a coma and passed away soon after � inside the clinic itself.
In his FIR filed at the police station, Inao had maintained similar statement and accused the Dy Medical Supdt.
of causing death out of negligence.
The contention however was different on the part of the clinic.
Talking personally to this correspondent Dr T Shoute claimed that he went to bed only at around 1 pm, as against the version of Inao, after confirming her condition.
To prove his point, the clinic has produced a document which shows that the doctor administering a delivery at 12:05 am to a 24-year old woman identified as Memton, wife of Jugeshore of Moirang.
And by the time all necessary procedures on the mother was done after the delivery it was already been 1 am, it further adds.
On the charges of neglect, the duty nurses claimed that patient who was still on her bed when the doctor last visited her was administered another injection as there is no sign of expansion.
It was at round 3:30-4:00 am that she began screaming and started bleeding profusely.
They further claimed that she was immediately taken to the delivery table and the doctor who was residing on the upper floor of the clinic immediately summoned.
By that time, according to Dr T Shoute, he had sense that the patient had a Uterine rapture and arrange for an emergency operation.
He also summoned Dr Paikhomba, a specialist to do the needful and immediately at around 4:30 am emergency procedures were set on motion and oxygen administered on her.
With the oxygen still attached, she was rushed to the District hospital where she succumbed.
Further, the doctor claimed that the patient who already had delivered a son in Caesarian Section four years ago was to deliver on the second week and their admission yesterday too was materialize on their will and not on his recommendation.
As women folks from Phaouchakkhai area thronged the hospital campus on hearing the sudden death, tension gripped the campus and sensing the situation police personnel led by its OC was deployed and maintained vigil even on the outskirt of the private clinic.
However, after negotiation, an understanding has been reached with the doctor agreeing to pay Rs 15 lakhs out of which Rs 10,000 was paid today and the remaining to be paid on September 11. After the full amount has been paid, the all cases against the doctor would be withdrawn by the patient party.
