Imphal, November 01:
As a part of the initiative to install night landing facilities at Tulihal Airport, a committee has been constituted to check feasibility for deployment of security personnel at observation towers which is a necessary component of the night landing facility.
Following the assurance made by Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh during his visit to the State last year that night landing facilities will be installed at Imphal airport, officials of the Airport Authority of India have visited the State twice to identify the spots where the observation towers will be constructed.
The AAI officials have recommended construction of observation towers at MU campus, Canchipur, Chingmeirong and Maibam Lokpa hills.
Subsequently, the committee was constituted to check the feasibility of these towers from security perspectives after a joint meeting of the officials of AAI, the State Home Department and top police officials. The Committee has also initiated spot enquiry at the recommended sites.
Construction of observation towers will begin after a report is submitted by the committee, said a source.
In tandem with the installation of night landing facilities, plans are afoot to enable cargo planes land at Imphal airport and to upgrade it to the status of an international airport.
At present, 60 flights are operating from the Imphal airport in a week.
