As in other parts of the world, various organisation today observed International Drug Users' Day in the State today.
Discussion on the harmful effects of drug abuse not only on the individual concerned, but also in family and the society at large and spreading awareness on the ways and means of giving up drug habit are the main highlights of th observance.
At Kangla Hall here, the International Drug Users' Day was observed under the aegis of USER Manipur with Education Minister L Jayentakumar Singh as chief guest, MLA Dr I Ibohalbi Singh as functional president and Publisher of Huiyel Lanpao Maibam Doren and Director of PATH Binoykumar as guests of honour.
Giving the key note address, president of USER Manipur Kamat said Manipur has been facing the problem of drug menace since 1970. However, the State Government has not come up with a policy to tackle the problem till date.
This is really unfortunate.
Chief guest of the fucntion, Minister Jayentakumar observed it is high time for all the people to find out why there is drug abuse among the people specially the youngsters despite knowing its harmfulness.
Instead of discrimination attitude toward the drug users, society should trust them and help in overcoming their drug habit, the Minister, while appreciating the activities of USER Manipur.
Manipur Network of Positive People (MNP+) also observed the Day at its office with Member of Manipur Human Rights Commission RK Rahendra, Sub-Inspector of Manipur Police Services RK Anil and vice president of AMUCO RK Doren as chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.
Social Awareness Service Organisation also observed Interntional Drug Users' Day at its office today.
Apart from speaking on the issue of drug users in Manipur by the general secretary of SASO A Arjun, a documentary film made by SASO was also screened at the occasion.
