A sixty two year old man was killed in bomb blast at Jiribam while a suspected cadre of the PULF has been slain by police personnel in an encounter in separate incidents in the past 24 hours.
The elderly man succumbed to grievous injuries when a bomb suspected to have been planted by militants exploded at Sotobekra located about 19 Kms south of Jiribam PS yesterday at around 12 noon.
The victim has been identified as Gunadhon Rai Phailengthang Punji.
He is reported to be a labourer.
The victim's body was handed over to family members after post mortem at Jiribam CHC.
The victim received bomb splinter wounds at the stomach and hands.
Two suspected PULF activists were killed during an encounter with commandos of Imphal East district at Keirao Makting Ingkhol Leirak under Irilbung police station at around 8 pm today.
One AK 47 and a .38 revolver besides ammunition were recovered from the slain men.
According to police report, the encounter took place when a team of police commando rushed into the area based on a specific tip off of presence of some underground activists there.
The victims have been identified as Md Kiyamuddin (25) and Md Amir (23), both residents of Keirao Makting.
One AK-47 along with 11 live rounds of ammunition was recovered from Md Kiyamuddin and one .38 revolver with 4 bullets from Md Amir, the source informed.
However, local people contended that Kiyamuddin was an innocent person who earned his livelihood by selling cloths at Allu Galli, Imphal.
Meanwhile, a police source said one Md Akbar (18) has been arrested from Keinou Awang Leikai today.
NSCN (IM) cadre held: Personnel of Imphal East district arrested one NSCN (IM) cadre during frisking routine at New Checkon area yesterday at about 5pm.The arrested person has been identified as Micheal Harangban (21) s/o HBS Saint of Hnamthem village in Chandel Dist.
Rs 25,000 was also recovered from his possession, added police.
During preliminary interrogation, the youth disclosed that he joined NSCN (IM) on Jan 17 2000 through one Thomas S/S Sgt Major of Chandel Dist and underwent six months training at Sungthra Chandel.
Meanwhile, Imphal East Police also arrested three persons in connection with a forgery case yesterday morning at round 8.30, said police.
The three arrested persons have been identified as Md Rashid Ahmed, L Binashakhi Devi and S Shanti Devi.
The three persons were arrested after Shyam Bihari Prasad of Majorkhul lodged a complaint to OC Porompat stating the trio were trying to withdraw the ex-gratia amount that is to be paid by the Govt in connection with the death of Shyam Bihari Prasad's brothers by using forged signatures.
