As part of the efforts being made by the Government of India to create and maintain unique identification (UID) database for all the residents of the country, a State Unique Identification Authority (SUIDA) has also been set up in Manipur on the lines of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) .
Just as UIDAI has been established by the Union Planning Commission, SUIDA has been set up under the State Planning Department, according to a reliable source.
As in other part of the country, creating and maintenance of UID database would also start with populatuion below poverty line (BPL) in Manipur, the source said, adding that to be headed by UID Commissioner in the rank of Joint Secretary to the Government of India, SUIDA is also expected to act as a tool for effective monitoring of various Govt programmes.
Additional Chief Secretary Planning of the State DS Poonia has yesterday written to all the Commissioners and Secretaries of the Department for extending support for linking the BPL Ration card database respectively to the SUIDA database, the source disclosed.
