Imphal, November 11:
Flatly rejecting the news report concerning use of villagers as forced labourers by 1 Assam Rifles to clear road side thickets and undergrowths as published in media, the Assam Rifles authority clarified that the bush clearing exercise was undertaken by the villagers voluntarily.
A press release issued by the PRO of IG AR (S) informed that headmen and village elders approached the 1st AR commandant and condoled the demise of the three AR personnel.
They also regretted failure to notice movement of UG cadres in advance.
Inspite of education of villagers through regular interaction with post commanders not to fiddle with any suspected article/material lying unattended, the boys in their exuberance picked up the explosive device that caused physical injuries, said the PRO.
While expressing anguish against UG cadres for putting the lives of innocent civilians in danger and for trying to disrupt peaceful atmosphere of the area, the villagers conveyed gratitude to AR posted at Sorde for the prompt medical provided to the injured boys.
The 1st AR commandant also visited the villages and extended monetary assistance to the families of the injured persons.
The AR authority also called upon the media not to project security forces in poor light and not to be swayed by pressure from UG groups.
