Imphal, July 23:
Reiterating its July 25 deadline for all vehicles to carry Meitei Mayek on their number plates, MEELAL today said that anyone found violating the condition will be targeted from July 26 without any distinction.
In a statement, the Mayek proponent said that the indigenous script is an important part of the identity of the people and what they are demanding is not against the law of the land.
The Mayek has been included in the Government Gazette, it said and added that it has been introduced in the educational institutions too.
By cracking down on artists who eke out a living by painting vehicle number plates, the police and the State Government are inviting trouble, said MEELAL and added that they were not hired by MEELAL either.
The only suggestions that MEELAL had given was to charge the minimum fee so as not to inconvenience the people.
It is absurd that a script which has been recognised by the Government should be stopped from being displayed on the number plates of vehicles, said MEELAL and added that there will be no let up in their stand at any cost.
