Over 4 lakh bank accounts opened

Imphal, January 11 2015:
So far 4,79,781 people of the State have opened their accounts in 24 banks under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY).
Number of households surveyed in the State for opening bank accounts under the scheme is 5,67,033.Out of these total number of households, 4,76,682 households have opened 4,79,781 bank accounts by January 6 .
90,788 people living in urban areas have opened bank accounts under PMJDY while the corresponding figure for rural areas is 3,85,893.Still 90,352 households are yet to open their bank accounts, informed an official source.
Even as the State Government has asked all the 24 bank branches located in Manipur to complete the process of opening bank accounts by January 15 ahead of the Government of India's deadline of January 26, the banks are yet to complete the same process with the exception of SBI branches, Canara bank and UCO bank.
These banks have been seeking additional period till the end of this month for completing the process of opening accounts.
Notably, the State Government has already set a condition of withdrawing money deposited in the banks which could not complete the process of opening accounts within the deadline it set and deposit the money in banks which perform better in terms of opening accounts under PMJDY.
