Imphal, September 10, 2010:
With just six regular teachers at Sangshak Govt High School, these teachers have been sharing their salaries with eight other teachers hired to run the school.
Sangshak Govt High School, which is one of the oldest Government schools, in Ukhrul district has more than 200 students.
It has classes from Nursery to Class X. As it was beyond the capacity of the six regular teachers to take all the classes, eight educated youth of the locality were hired to make up for the shortage of teachers.
Pay of the eight hired teachers are paid from the salaries of the regular teachers.
Even though the Sangshak Govt High School was established in 1946, it has been a long time since the Govt authority stopped paying any attention to the school, decried its Headmaster Ramyo.
As for infrastructure, most of the class rooms are dotted with huge holes.

GI sheets were seen being used to cover the holes.
In addition to shortage of desks and benches, the little number of desks and benches were on the verge of breaking down any moment.
Kitchen built under Mid Day Meal scheme of the SSA was being used as class room for class X.There was a shortage of around 16 teachers for different subjects, particularly Science and Mathematics.
This problem of teacher shortage was a result of the Government authority's failure to send replacement teachers for those who retired or transferred away to other schools, the Headmaster said.
All these problems of teacher shortage inadequate infrastructure were highlighted to the relevant department many times but to no avail.
Neglecting Sangshak Government High School is tantamount to neglecting all the people of ten villages of Sangshak and surrounding areas as it is the only Government school in the area, lamented a villager.
He also questioned the chance of these villages making any progress when proper education, the most fundamental backbone of development and progress, was not available to students of the area.
