Imphal, September 10, 2010:
With the Zero Garbage Campaign picking up momentum, the number of households admitted to NGOs engaged in garbage picking work has been increasing, claimed PDA Chairman Dr Kh Loken.
Speaking as chief guest at the media sensitisation workshop for journalists on zero garbage organised as a part of the campaign at Manipur Press Club here today, Dr Loken said that the Zero Garbage campaign has succeeded in reaching the targeted populace after local clubs were roped in for the same campaign.
Nevertheless, he asserted that keeping Imphal city and Imphal Municipal area neat and clean by checking disposal of waste material on roads and in drains cannot be accomplished by the Government alone.
Everyone and every household should share the responsibility with a commitment, Dr Loken said.
So far, the campaign has covered Thangmeiband, Uripok and Sagolband constituencies.
The sensitisation workshop was presided by AMWJU president Khogendra Khomdram.
MAHUD Commissioner S Sunderlal was the guest of honour.

IMC administrator N Geetkumar and IMC health officer Arunkanta addressed the workshop as resource persons.
Geetkumar said that only the media can inform the public about the campaign.
Citing a report of the Central Pollution Control Board, Geetkumar said that 60 per cent of the waste materials discharged from Imphal city every day can be converted into manure.
Another 15 per cent can be recycled.
To dispose off the remaining 25 per cent in a proper manner so that it does not affect human health and environment, efforts are being made to set up a treatment plant under JNURM at Lamdeng.
The Government has set a target of initiating construction of the treatment plant by March next year.
The Zero Garbage campaign would be taken up to 27 wards of IMC with the help of 277 local clubs.
After the campaign, NGOs would visit each and every household and collect garbage.
For this, each household should pay Rs 50 per month to the NGO.
But first the households should admit to the particular NGOs by paying Rs 30 each.
The admission fee of Rs 30 would not be charged for those who seek admission within the campaign period, he added.
