Imphal, August 12:
In remembrance of the supreme sacrifice made by K Memita Chanu to demand the repeal of Armed Forces Special Powers Act from Manipur on this day last year, United Committee Manipur, Awang Lam Ching-Tam unit today observed her first death anniversary as Ireibak Meeyamgidamak Tha-waina Pontha Pikhiba Numit' at Keibi Taretkhul Primary School.
A large number of people paid homage and offered floral tributes not only to Memita, but also to the photographs of Th Manorama, P Chittaranjan and Jamkholet Khongsai at the occasion.
Speaking as chief guest of the function, member of Manipur Human Rights Commission Lt Col RK Rajendra observed that dividing Manipur as hill and valley and the people as hill and valley people itself creates a sort of discrimination in the minds of the people.
Instead of such social divisions, everyone, irrespective of their caste, creed, and religious background should join hands to make the people economically independent.
In his presidential address, UCM president in-charge K Lanngamba cautioned the people to be on the alert against the underlying motive behind lifting of the protracted economic blockade temporari- ly by ANSAM following a missive from the Centre.
If the Centre exerted pressure on the Government of Manipur to review its June 18 declaration, and the State Government gives into it, the people of Manipur would never take it lightly, he said.
