Authority of the state Agriculture Department today distributed paddy seeds for first crop to the farmers of Sangaithel in Imphal West district under scheme sponsored by the Union Ministry of Agriculture, Department of Agriculture Cooperation, New Delhi.
On the occasion, 35 kg of paddy seeds to be grown in 70 acres of field under the System of Rice Intensification (SRI) were distributed to farmers.
The paddy seeds are of variety 807 and HRD IR-64.The paddy seed was distributed through the Kanglei Ching-Tam Trade Union.
Speaking at the paddy seeds distribution function, SE, K Manoranjam of the department said that growing of rice under SRI can enhance the productivity of rice.
Once rice is grown with SRI method of farming, the farmers will get a taste of yielding high in their fields.
He said that with the advice of the state agriculture minister N Loken, the department is trying to enhance all round productivity of food grain in the state.
The department is also trying to procure latest agricultural equipments for onward supply to the farmers.
President of the Integrated Serial Development Progressive Rights, L Ibomcha appealed to the farmers to apply the new method of SRI rice cultivation for enhancing the productivity.
This method implies sowing of only 5 kg of rice to an acre, he added.
