Imphal, October 29 2008: TROOPS OF 29 Assam Rifles claimed to have gunned down one underground cadre in an alleged ambush near Sita in Chandel district early morning today.

According to PRO Assam Rifles, the incident took place at general area of Laibi and Sita in Chandel district when troops 29 Assam Rifles of 26 Sector under HQ Inspector General of Assam Rifles (South), based on specific information regarding movement of UGs, launched operation and laid multiple ambushes at around 4.50 am.

The Assam Rifles personnel observed one person coming towards ambush area.

"On being challenged to stop, the person tried to fire at our troops" a statement of PRO said, adding, "Our troops responded immediately and eliminated the UG cadre before he could use his weapon".

One Lathod (40mm, made in USA) and three live Lathod bomb have been recovered from the slain UG cadre, the statement claimed.

The dead body whose identity is yet to be established along with the recovered items have been handed over to Tengnoupal Police Station on Wednesday, it added.

None of the underground outfit operating in the state claimed their involvement in the incident till the filing of this report.

Meanwhile, on October 27, troops of 12 Madras Regiment, under it's Military Civic Action project, dedicated a Youth Centre and Vocational Training Centre for the villagers of Sinjwal, a remote village close to Manipur-Mizoram-Myanmar border.

Since then the Security Forces has been looking after the village by providing them medical comforts, solar lights, water supply schemes and now the twin projects of the Youth Centre and the Vocational Training Centre.

These centers have been built with the aim of providing the locals a platform to utilize their skills to create gainful employment and also to exploit the artistic and musical talent of the youth.

The project is also being visualized as a foundation in improving the livelihood of the locals.

The centers have been equipped with variety of stores like various musical and sports equipment, solar lights, handloom machines, sewing machines, embroidery machines, carpentry tools and blacksmith tools.

The village is waiting for the day when their government school will have teachers, the primary health centre will have doctors, when the police station at Thanlon will have policemen and the SDO complex will have officials.

Until then the security forces continue to come to their assistance at all times,the Assam Rifles statement added.
