A two-day conference on "Women for Peace, Progress and Prosperity", organised jointly by five Lioness Clubs in Manipur with the support of nine Lions Clubs under the Lions Clubs International District 322-D has begun at the Jawaharlal Nehru Dance Academy here.
The theme of the conference relates with the upliftment of the society through peace and harmony focusing on the true meaning of companionship called Etaroi 2009 among like-minded women who can work and play together with common goal.
The inaugural function of the conference, which is the first of its kind in the North East India, was attended by Manipur Governor, Gurbachan Jagat as chief guest, MP Agarwala, MJF Multiple chairperson of MD-322 and PK Dutta, MJF district Governor, 322D as guests of honour.
The Governor released a souvenir of the Lions Club and an all India directory of the club on the occasion.
Addressing the gathering at the inaugural function, Governor, Gurbachan Jagat lauded the objectives of the Lions Clubs International as to create and foster a spirit of understanding among the people of the world, to promote the principles of good governance and good citizenship, to take an active interest in the civic, cultural, social and moral welfare of the community over the years.
He said, "No service is as great and valuable as the service of the poor, needy and less for fortunate groups of people is laudable".
The activities towards the prevention of blindness and towards ameiliorating the lot of the people particularly of the less fortunate and disadvantaged group and promotion and development activities of the youth of the club is indeed a commendable one, Gurbachan said.
In his speech, the governor also mention that Manipur has its own civilization, arts and culture and women of this state are also stepping forward for the betterment of society and said changes always come and changes always bring better for the society.
Expressing his happiness to the holding of the conference with the theme "Women for Peace, Progress and Prosperity", he further said that peace and harmony beget progress and prosperity in society.
"Idea of peace and harmony among the people are the responsibilities of all men, women and children at all levels.
They have to work together on a wide cross section of activities.
Co-operation between different people with humility to breed love and harmony can provide stability and support necessary for lasting result," he said.
The International Association of Lions Clubs, founded on June 7, 1917 has today become one of the largest club organization in the world with over 1.3 million members in 40,083 clubs in 743 districts covering 205 countries.
The outreach of the club which is global is a notable one, the Governor said.
