The house of an alleged rapist was ransacked by a mob at Laikhong Makha Leikai under Yairipok Police Station last night, at about 11.30 pm, an official report said today.
A mob ransacked the house of one Wairokpam Kullabi (27) son of late Ibohanbi of Laikhong Makha Leikai in Imphal East District on the alleged charge of raping his sister in-law on August 2 .
Kullabi who was visiting the house of his brother-in-law (his wife's elder brother) at Laikhong Makha Leikai allegedly raped his brother-in-law's wife taking advantage of the fact that she was alone when came to the house.
The victim told her husband of the rape.
The next day he lodged a complaint with the local club, Laikhong Youth Club, seeking justice.
The club conducted a hearing on the charge and Kullabi confessed committing the crime.
The club with a strong warning not to repeat such an act in future asked Kullabi to pay a compensation of Rs one lakh to the victim on or before August 30.A deal was also signed with regard to the payment of the compensation, the victim went to recall.
In the meantime, in the evening of August 27, at about 6.45 pm, a person identified himself to be commander of the fighting unit of the KCP(Noyon) phoned to the finance secretary of the Laikhong Youth Club and charged the club for defaming the reputation of the family of the alleged accused, members of the local club said.
The caller asked why the club is imposing a fine of Rs one lakh to Kullabi to the family and summoned them to meet him but the finance secretary convinced the caller of the facts that took place that fateful day, they added.
In order to discuss the latest developments, a public meeting was held yesterday, Kullabi, who was invited to attend the meeting, failed turn up even though he was called up repeatedly.
Irate over Kullabi's failure to turn up in the meeting, villagers thronged the house of Kullabi and ransacked it, the president of the club informed a team of reporters who visited the village today.
While recalling past incidents, the president said that there was a record of a rape of a girl of the locality by the same accused Kullabi some 10 years back.
Now, the club has decided to expel the accused along with his family from the locality and if the accused fails to pay the amount (Rs one lakh) to the victim by August 30 as per agreement, properties of the family will be auctioned and the amount received from it will be paid as compensation to the victim, the president added.
