Imphal, March 03 2013 :
After a lull, the demand for implementation of Inner Line Permit (ILP) system in Manipur has resurfaced once again with Federation of Regional Indigenous Society (FREINDS) holding the State administration squarely responsible for increasing crimes and atrocities committed against native women by non-Manipuris.
Addressing a press conference at the office of FRIENDS here today, its President Sapamcha Jadumani observed that the manner in which Soshima Keishing, a native woman, was locked up and set on fire by her non-Manipuri husband, who hails from Cachar but presently staying in a rented house in Mantripukhri on February 27, was one of the cruelest crimes that the people of Manipur have to confront with the State Government doing nothing to stop the influx of outsiders.
Soshima suffered 40% burns in the incident and she is undergoing treatment at RIMS.
Jadumani maintained that such inhuman treatment of native women by non-Manipuris is becoming rampant.
There are a number of native women who are silently bearing the tortures meted out to them by their non-Manipuri husbands.
Jadumani cited numerous cases including that of the Churachandpur incident in which a minor girl was raped and tried to be abducted to Dimapur by one Bijoy of Bihar but was ultimately rescued by the volunteers of FREINDS.
He also pointed out the case of Telem Romita who was abandoned by her husband Ramesh Gupta, Proprietor of Capital Watch, Paona bazaar, after torturing inhumanly.
Reacting to involvement of non-Manipuris in smuggling of drugs into the State, Jadumani said that the culprits should be caught and necessary legal actions taken up against them at the earliest, before they create further troubles in the State.
Meanwhile, FREINDS had visited the victim of the February 27 incident at the hospital.
The 24-year-old housewife identified as Soshima Keishing is struggling for her life in a hospital here after her husband Chandal Kal along with mother-in-law and sister-in-law set her on fire.
The incident happened at Lamlongei Mantripukhri in Imphal West district in Manipur on February 27 evening.
She was taken to Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in the same night.
The accused husband and mother-in-law have been taken into custody of Heingang Police Station.
However, the sister-in-law is absconding, according to police.
Chandal Kal, a native of Silchar in Assam, is working for Imphal Tulihal Airport.
The couple married 4 years back and now they have a 3-year-old daughter.
