Imphal, June 22 2010:
The driver and an occupant have been killed while about 20 suffered injuries when a truck they were travelling in plunged into a deep gorge near Laiyang village on the Imphal-Jiribam route at around noon today.
A police source said that the truck was carrying labourers for development/repairing of NH-53 and ration for the workers when the mishap occurred.
The ill-fated truck (MN06T/0116), reportedly tumbled down 500 metres deep gorge while trying to overtake another truck which was ahead of the two-truck convoy that carried about 45 labourers and their food items.

Laiyang village is located near milestone No.35 in between Kotlien and K Sinam villages.
The deceased labourer as well as the injured persons was/are all from Leishangthem Thoudam of Thoubal district.
Chief Minister O Ibobi who represents Thoubal A/C , rushed to RIMS as soon as he was informed about the accident.
The victim labourer has been identified as Mayengbam Sobha Singh (42) s/o (L) Khomei of Thoubal Leishangthem Thoudam and the deceased driver as one Oinam Ramananda Singh s/o Haridas of Kakwa Nameirakpam Leikai.
While Sobha passed away on the way to hospital Ramananda died on the spot.
It is said that the labourers were engaged by a contractor for road development/repairing works of NH-53 under the State PWD.
Including the truck's assistant driver all the injured persons have been brought to RIMS Hospital.
personnel of the 86th bn CRPF soon rushed to the accident spot and took major role in the rescue and evacuation of the injured persons to RIMS hospital, said the police source also informing that troops of 26 Assam Rifles also extended assistance in the rescue and salvage operation.
Meanwhile, HERICOUN has conveyed heartfelt condolence to family members and relatives of the mishap victims in addition to its functionaries enquiring conditions of the injured persons at RIMS.
HERICOUN has also made a fervent appeal to all concerned to contribute their mite in the treatment of the injured persons and extend all possible assistance to members of the bereaved families.
