Imphal, December 17:
With the State Government unable to come to an understanding with the JAC constituted in connection with the killing of Lourembam Basanta in the midnight of December 15, the corpse is still lying at RIMS morgue.
On the other hand, the JAC has made all preparations to launch intense agitation in case the State Government fails to fulfil its demands by December 20.A public meeting held today at Taothong Lamkhai Bazar decided to seek cooperation from different Meira Paibi groups and social organisations and to endorse the resolutions adopted in the public meeting held yesterday.
The meeting resolved to launch intense agitation in case the State Government fails to fulfil the demand of the JAC by December 20.It also flayed the Government for its abject failure to check murders and attempts to murder in places where security personnel are deployed in large numbers.
The meeting decided to appeal to all concerned to support the ongoing road blockade along Uripok-Kangchup road and to bear the inconveniences.
Meanwhile, taking strong exception to the killing of Lourembam Basanta in the mid-night of December 15 at Taothong near the Public Girls' High School, the All Manipur United Clubs' Organisation has condemned the killing in the strongest term.
A statement issued by AMUCO noted that such heinous crimes may become a daily affair if the culprits are not awarded fitting punishment.
Quoting media reports that one Thoudem Premchand and some of his accomplices were directly involved in the murder, AMUCO appealed to all the people to investigate the murder case and punish the culprits in a befitting manner.
AMUCO also assured cooperation to the JAC constituted in connection with the murder in all its movements against the accused Thoudem Premchand and his accomplices.
Terming it an act of terrorism, the Committee on Human Rights (COHR) has also condemned the murder of Lourembam Basanta (36) and injuring of Lourembam Sanjit (25).As Sanjit survived the incident, the identities of the culprits can be established, said a press release while calling upon the people to find out the facts behind the murder and to award commensurate punishment to the culprits.
Such unprovoked killing was a direct imitation of the gross violation of human rights by security forces under the impunity provided by the draconian AFSPA 1958, observed COHR.
Joining the outcry against the Taothong murder, the Poirei Leimarol Meira Paibi Apunba Manipur has also pledged support to the JAC in its struggle to punish the culprits in accordance to the crime.
The Meira Paibi Lup cautioned that such heartless crimes may become a daily happening in the State in case people fail to stand up collectively against such criminal acts.
Assuring its support to the JAC in its movements to bring justice concerning the murder of Lourembam Basanta, the All Manipur Women Voluntary Association (AMAWOVA) has condemned the murder as an act of terrorism.
In the same vein, the Meira Paibi Welfare Association Kangleipak (MEPWAK) has also demanded befitting punishment to accused Premchand and his accomplices.
It also pledged support to the JAC.
