The Education Kilonser (Minister) of the Federal Government of Nagaland (FGN/NNC) was gunned down by unidentified gunmen at MLA Hostel junction here at around 10.20 am yesterday.
Police later identified the deceased as L Palang Khiamniungan, Education Kilonser of the FGN.
Palang was the son of Lemtsi of Nokhu village in Tuensang district in Nagaland.
He was residing at Transit Peace Camp, Mission Compound, Kohima.
The victim sustained two bullet injuries on the head and the chest, official sources said.
Two empty cases of 7.65 pistol were recovered from the spot.
The body was later handed over to family members.
Meanwhile, the FGN has held the NSCN (I-M) responsible for the killing.
The faction in a statement issued by its deputy Rali-Wali Kilonser, G Panmei said the killing of Palang had "put to pits" the efforts of Naga Mothers' Association and Nagaland Baptist Church Council for healing and reconciliation among the Naga underground factions.
"Such killing can never be a victory for them and the crime they have committed will not be forgotten by the Naga people or hidden from God," the FGN added.
