Imphal, March 17 2011:
Yanglet Haokip, chairman of the Kuki (Khulmi) Development Council Demand Committee Manipur, met with Union Home Minister P Chidambaram along with Bijoya Chakravorty, MP (LS) and vice president, BJP at North Block yesterday at 5 pm.
In the meeting Haokip raised the issue for creation of Kuki (Khulmi) Development Council under the 6th schedule of the Indian Constitution.
The proposal of the council had already been submitted in a memorandum to the Prime Minister Manmohon Singh, a statement of the chairman said.
During the meeting both Bijoya Chakravorty and Yanglet Haokip urged the Home Minister to implement the 6th schedule to the Kukis in line with Bodoland Territorial Council in Assam, North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council and Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council of Assam for amelioration of welfare schemes deprived to the Kukis.
In response to the proposal of the two leaders, P Chidambaram assured that he will take up the demand of the Kuki (Khulmi) Development Council for early implementation to fulfill the aspirations of the Kuki peoples, the statement claims.
In another reply in the meeting, Chidambaram told the two leaders that there are also some other organizations belonging to the Kukis at Churachandpur District and Sadar Hills District for other separate demands and because of all these different demands among the Kukis the Government could not take a decision for implementation of the 6th scheduled for the two districts of Churachandpur, Chandel and the Sadar Hills under one administration unit.
But the government can make necessary arrangements for the creation of Kuki (Khulmi) Development Council under 6th scheduled if the people of Chandel district agreed for separate implementation in their district alone for bringing development peace and harmony among different communities in Manipur, the statement added.
