Imphal, July 31 2009:Citing UGC guidelines, the Manipur University Tribal Students' Union (MUTSU) has urged upon the State Government to follow state Government reservation policy in matters relating to admission to various courses of studies in Manipur University.
Observing that not every district of Mizoram and Meghalaya are not scheduled areas yet they follow 50 percent reservation in matter of admissions for the academic session 2009-10 in the university, MUTSU demanded what they were supposed to get as per their population size.
In a press release, MUTSU quoted Clause 16 of the UGC guideline which read thus "Action should be initiated by the Universities so as to effect necessary amendments to their Acts/Statutes for the statutory support for reservation in admission, appointments to teaching and non-teaching posts and representation of ST/SC in their bodies like Syndicate Executive Council, Academic Council, Selection Committees etc."
It also cited Clause 17 which says "The policy guidelines are minimum prescribed for observation policy for SC/ST.
The University/institutions are free to provide additional benefits to these categories with the approval of their Board of Governors/Executive Council etc.".
Decrying the reluctance of the University authority to initiate a single step forward for implementation of the provision despite the prolonged struggle of MUTSU towards this end, it said that sincerity and transparency of the State Government and University authority was the immediate need for solution of the present stalemate in the university.
MUTSU also questioned the MU authority's failure to declare results of the interview held for recruitment of teachers in Political Science and some other faculties till date.
