Imphal, October 24 2009:
The proposed agitation of the transporters to surrender the permits of their respective buses to the Transport Director in pursuance of their demand for issuing route permission in accordance to a definite transport policy did not take place today.
However, none of the passenger buses were in service on the roads today.
Instead of surrendering the permits to the Transport Director, a joint meeting of the bus owners held here today decided to surrender the permits to the Chief Minister.
After the meeting, at around 2 pm, the bus owners came marching towards the Chief Minister's bungalow to hand over their permits.
But they were stopped by the police near Thoubal Parking at Keishampat.
Later on, only a team of selected few from among the agitating bus owners were allowed to go and hand over their permits to the Chief Minister.
However, as the Chief Minister did not grant an appointment, the team returned without surrendering the permits.
It is said that a joint meeting of the Government and the bus owners would be held on Monday to discuss the demands of the Association and if no solution could be brought about in the said meeting, the Association would take recourse to various other intense agitations.
