As in previous years, Fish Fair cum Fish Crop Competition, 2006 has been organised by Directorate of Fisheries at Mapal Kangjeibung here today.
The event is being organised since 1976 in connection with the Ningol Chakkouba Festival.
Fisheries Minister N Mangi and MLA Dr M Kara Singh were respectively chief guest and president of the inaugurated function of the Fish Fair cum Fish Crop Competition which was also attended by Commissioner (Fisheries) L Lekhar, IAS, Director (Fisheries) K Saratkumar Singh and other officials of the Department.
In all 51 stalls are taking part in the Fish Fair.
Different varieties of fishes.like Sareng, Rahu, Catla, Mirgal, Grass Carp, Silver Carp, Common Carp, Kurry and Pengba are being put up for display as well as for sale at the fair.
In the competition section, Soibam Dhanbir Singh of Fish Farmers' Development Agency, Imphal who managed to produced 6,796 kgs of fish crops won the first prize.
Tongbram Robindro Singh who produced 4,427.5 kgs of fish crops under the supervision of DFO Bishnupur won the second prize while the third prize was clinched by Joint Selungkhong Pisciculture Cum Live Stock Rearing Co-operative Society, Oinam with a production capacity of 3,410.20 kgs offish crops.
In his address chief guest of the inaugural function, Fisheries Minister lauded the efforts being made by the fish farmers and encouraged them to carry on with their hard work so as meet the demand of the people, who otherwise have to depend on the fishes imported from outside the State.
Accompanied by officials of the Fisheries Department the Minister also went around to inspect the stalls being put up at the fair.
