Imphal, December 14:
MPP Legislature leader Dr Nimaichand Luwang drew the attention of the Chief Minister for suspension of all the process being carried out for recruitment in Government jobs until the State Government has reserved 22 percent of the seats for OBCs in concurrence to the directive of the Centre.
Raising a motion of the issue of reservation for OBCs, Dr Luwang pointed out that jobs have been kept reserved for the OBCs since 1993 by the Centre in accordance to the guidelines of the Mandal Commission.
But this facility has not yet been given to the people who belong to the OBCs in Manipur till date.
Referring to the existing pattern of the Central reservation norms which is 1 percent for SC, 27 percent for ST and 22 percent for OBC, the MLA pointed out that whereas in Manipur only 16 percent of the reserved seats has been left after having kept aside 2 percent for SC and 31 percent for ST.
The bandh called by the Manipuri Muslims demanding job reservation for the OBCs was not against the Meiteis at all.
The Manipuri Muslims are only demanding quotas for those group of people including the Meiteis who fall within the category of the OBC, he observed.
In his response to the motion, Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh informed the House that a three-member independent statutory commission has been set and it has started looking into the matter.
