Just a day ahead of issue of notification for the first phase polling of the Lok Sabha Sabha election, Congress today has announced its candidates to be fielded in the two seats from Manipur.
ECI will issue notification tomorrow for the first phase polling for the 15th Lok Sabha Election, 2009 which will go on poll on April 16.The Outer Manipur Parliamentary Constituency included among the constituencies.
The notification for the Inner Manipur seat which the polling is scheduled on April 22 will be issued on March 28.Meanwhile, Congress has finally announced the names of the candidates for the tw seats from Manipur today at New Delhi, according to an agency report.
The party announced sitting MP Thokchom Meinya as its official nominee for the Inner Manipur constituency while Thangso Baite for the Outer seat.
The announcment was made after getting clearance from the Central Election Committee (CEC) of the party, the report said.
The names of the candidatures in respect of two seats of the Parliament from Manipur were included among the three more names for the congress.
The party declared Somabhai G Patel as its nominee from Surendranagar constituency in Gujarat.
Meanwhile, state Congress workers today have urged the state Chief Minister, O Ibobi to take up measures to protect their life stating that electioneering of the party has been greatly affected by the persisting threats to the Congress by attacking with guns and bombs in the last few days.
Congress workers urged the Chief Minister while he was attending a meeting of the party at the Congress Bhavan, BT road this afternoon.
The meeting was also convened to consider on targeting the Congress workers particularly by an underground outfit, source at the Congress officer here said.
Leaders of the Congress organization, MLAs, ministers put up the matter on behalf of the Congress workers to the Chief Minister in the meeting which MPCC chief Gaikhangam presided.
Congress workers have been keeping into a chaos situation since after two of three workers including the district president of Bishnupur unit Maipak were shot at by the gunmen suspected to be activists of an underground outfit.
Not only this, after the house of youth wing president of the party, L Tilotama was attacked with guns during the Yaosang festival, last night also miscreants attacked with bomb at the resident of the sitting MLA, I Hemochandra who was among the main contender for Congress ticket before the announcement of the tickets late today.
Responding to the urges of the party workers, Chief Minister, O Ibobi reported convinced the workers that he will look into the detailing of adequate security personnel to protect them and security measures have also been taken up.
Some workers suggest the chief minister for negotiation with the particular underground group, if possible but Chief Minister turned down it stating that at any circumstances, he will not compromise with them outside the purview of the country's law.
